i’m not the first person to say this but I do think 2023 will be remembered as the year the internet really started going downhill– whether you’re experiencing ai-glut, or you’ve all but signed out of your social networks (unless you’re really into instagram reels or sponsored content), or you’re finding it near impossible to read any kind of article without safari crashing from the onslaught of ads…. if you think about how much fun you’re having when you look at a screen now vs, like, even 2015? no comparison.

nowhere is this more prevalent to me than the utter fucking uselessness of google search results. what used to be the gateway to the world has become monetized, SEO-cheated, scrubbed clean of anything you wouldn’t be able to find on your own, topped with an ai-generated rundown of the shit you’re about to roll your eyes at before you remember to add “reddit” to the end of your query.

all this to say

i’m not surprised that the one good thing i’ve seen come out of this year is the seemingly interminable capabilities of google reverse image search. i’ll keep names out of this due to my own embarrassment but months ago, a micro influencer posted a photo with only the top corner of a dress she was wearing, and after days of trying various keywords to find it, I reverse searched a screenshot. google found the exact dress in half a second.

powered by our lust for - you guessed it - buying shiiiiiittttt, and best employed via the google mobile app, which automatically asks if you want to search your last screenshot when you open it, let the last vestiges of the internet work for *you*. work smarter not harder etc etc.
